Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names

A searchable database of geographic names. Arranged in a hierarchy, so you can drill up from your search result to find county, region, state, and so on for your original village name. The alternate spellings in the database make this a good site to go to when you have a mysterious katakana rendering of a place name.
