Nii Scholarly and Academic Information Navigator

|

Can be used to find English renderings of the names of Japanese authors of academic papers, as well as technical terminology.

DMOZ - Human-Edited Web Directory

A hierarchical, human-edited directory similar to Yahoo, but run by volunteers. Over four million sites and just less than 75,000 editors as of 27 December 2006. Thanks to Adam Rice for this link.

Clusty - Metasearch Meets Clustering

Uses results from other search engines as well as a commonality algorithm to produce one set of links plus another set of clustered links.

Google

The benchmark search engine.

Sample searches:

第一四半期 English [to find English equivalents of 第一四半期]

咽癌 cancer [to find the English equivalent of 咽癌 when you think the word cancer might be included or nearby]

復刊とは [to search for a page defining the term 復刊]

N.B. If you don't include kana, Google might search only for Chinese sites. Add a は, add Japanese in the language preferences, or use the Japanese Google site to avoid this.
